Haggai’s had a message: rebuild the temple! Through the physical act of rebuilding the temple, the people began to indicate a shift in their spiritual lives: from devotion to self toward devotion to God.

The Objects of Trust

•We are TEMPTED to place our TRUST in the promises of leaders and the possibility of change.

•We are WISE to place our TRUST in the character of God and the certainty of his promises.

•God is a PATIENT judge—his patience at times has been misunderstood as inaction (1:2-3)

•God is a COMPREHENSIVE judge—when he chooses to act, there is no escape (1:4-6)

•God is a GOOD judge: he punishes the rebellious and protects the repentant (1:7-8)

God’s justice is both retributive and restorative, he requires that we labor at both.

Understanding Jonah:

Chapter 1: I won’t go

Chapter 2: I will go

Chapter 3: I did go 

Chapter 4: I wish I’d never gone

Lessons Learned In Conflict:

•Decisions made today have consequences for tomorrow (vs. 1, 10)

•Operating independently of God is an act of prideful rebellion ( vs. 3, 4)

•During another’s crisis we cannot remain uninvolved (vs. 11).

Things Abundance Cannot Promise:

•Immunity from self-deception (Amos 2:4)

•Awareness of those in need (Amos 2:6-8)

•Memories of God’s past work (2:9-11)

•Independent living (2:12-16)

•Fully fulfilled desires (6:4-8)

The Do's and Don'ts of Repentance

• DO it today—don’t delay.

• DO it for love—love God more than your fickle desires (Deut. 6:5).

• DON’T do it superficially—think about what you were willing to lose.

• DON’T do it deceptively—be more concerned about what God knows than what others see.

God's Relationship With You

•God’s relationship with you is not based upon your performance but on his love (3:1).

•God’s discipline of you is not permanent but restorative (1:10-11)

•God’s plan for you is for your good and his glory (1:4, 11; 2:22)
